The day of Orange...

On the 1st of May I decided to embrace my Dutch heritage in a whole new way. I have made friends with a girl from Holland and she invited me to go to their Queens Day celebration that they have here in Cambodia. I was instructed to wear Orange and be prepared for an afternoon of hanging out and eating food. So first on my list was to get an orange shirt.

This seems like a simple task or so I thought. Into the market I plunged walking through the aisles of bright clothing and festive fabrics. They had shirts that would tell people I “heart” Cambodia and other various designs; but if they did have anything in the color I needed they didn’t have it in my size. I finally found a shirt I liked and it looked like it would fit. When I inquired to the seller aboutthe size she seemed to barely register my presence and told me quite bluntly it was too small and as I asked again if I could try it to see if that was the case, she very plainly said I was too big and she did not have that size. Wow…talk about customer service! I have never seen a seller act like this. I even had a seller
previous to this one who tried telling me that a shirt would shrink so it would fit me. I did finally manage to find a shirt that I could wear, I liked, and the correct color.

Next came getting my nails painted in Orange, with glitter :)

I bought a shirt for $5 that was too hard to resist.

I even got my picture taken with the "Queen"
We had silly games such as trying to put a nail into a pop bottle and other games for the kids.

The best part of spending time with people from Holland is that we all like free stuff and try to get a good deal. All the food was free or $1...I can handle that! They even had Orange beer compliments of Heineken, which I learned is a Dutch Beer company.

All and all it was a very fun afternoon and I even bought a few children books in Dutch. I think my family needs to start celebrating the Queen's birthday when I get home;)

You never know

You just never know what you will read in the paper here. They have a great section with fun random little stories that I believe are for pure amusement. I wanted to share one of the stories with you. Thank you Cambodian Daily :)

In London… “A man who thought he was sailing along the coast of southern England had to be rescued after his boat ran out of fuel while repeatedly circling a small island in the River Thames estuary. The man, who had no nautical guides and only a roadmap to navigate by, had been trying to sail from Gillingham, about 55 km east of London, to Southampton on April 19 by following the southern coast. But he ended simply doing laps of the 93 square km Isle of Sheppey a short distance away in the mouth of the Thames. A lifeboat and coastguard were sent to rescue him after he used up all his fuel and ran aground, officials said Wednesday. He told them he had been trying to navigate by keeping the coastline to his right.”

I hope this brightens your day…and I have to say, “Really!?!? A road map and just follow the coast line?”
